Welcome to Raleigh, NC

Raleigh, North Carolina, welcomes you with its signature Southern charm and sunny weather. Just a 3.5-hour drive from Virginia Beach, our spontaneous road trip to Raleigh was the perfect day-long escape. With car karaoke in full swing, we cruised down I-95, enjoying picturesque farmland views along the way.

Pro Tip: To avoid rush-hour traffic, hit the road no later than 6 a.m., depending on your starting point. Raleigh’s city traffic starts building around 9–9:30 a.m., so an early departure means smoother sailing.

So, yes—wake up before the crack of dawn, cross your fingers for no traffic, and enjoy the peaceful sight of grazing cows. Exciting? Well, that’s up for debate, but trust me—it’s worth it when your first stop is one of the best breakfast spots in Downtown Raleigh.

Breakfast at A Place at the Table Café – Downtown Raleigh

Nothing works up an appetite like a road trip! If you’ve forgotten snacks (rookie mistake), don’t worry. Once you arrive in Raleigh, head straight to A Place at the Table Café at 300 W Hargett St #50. This community-focused eatery is known as Raleigh’s first “pay-what-you-can” café. Here’s how it works:

  1. Pay full price for your food (taxes included).

  2. Pay what you can afford.

  3. Volunteer for one hour in exchange for your meal.

  4. Donate a meal to someone in need or purchase a gift card.

The menu is packed with hearty, Southern-inspired breakfast dishes that feel like a warm hug from grandma’s kitchen. Build your own platter with staples like buttermilk pancakes, biscuits, waffles, or loaded breakfast sandwiches.

I opted for their fluffy waffles with bacon and creamy cheese grits, while my sweet tooth demanded their brown-sugar homemade pop tart—a treat so good it’ll make you question every store-bought version you’ve ever eaten. Paired with their friendly staff and meaningful community initiative, this café is the perfect start to your Raleigh adventure.

Things to Do in Raleigh: History, Science, and Beyond

Once you’ve fueled up, dive into Raleigh’s vibrant history and culture. Here are some must-visit attractions to include in your day trip:

1. North Carolina Museum of History

Located in the heart of downtown, this museum offers an immersive journey into North Carolina’s rich history, from the Indigenous tribes of the Outer Banks to pirate escapades and Civil Rights struggles.

Highlights include:

  • A replica of a slave cabin, offering a sobering glimpse into North Carolina’s Jim Crow past.

  • Exhibits on the Wright Brothers’ groundbreaking flight and the state’s contributions to aviation.

  • Stories of resilience and progress in Black communities post-Civil War.

Pro Tip: The museum is undergoing renovations starting October 2024, so visit soon!

2. North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Right across the street is this stunning museum, a must for nature lovers. From wildlife exhibits to North Carolina’s native gemstones, you’ll find a wealth of knowledge and Instagram-worthy sights here.

Don’t forget to explore the butterfly exhibit or head to the upper floors to marvel at rubies, emeralds, and quartz found in the state.

Lunch at Morgan Street Food Hall

All that walking will work up an appetite! Just an eight-minute drive from Raleigh’s Capitol building, Morgan Street Food Hall is a haven for foodies.

With a variety of eateries serving everything from Greek and Indian cuisine to Latin and Southern soul food, this spot has something for everyone.

I indulged in butter chicken with basmati rice, while my husband enjoyed homemade steak and chicken tacos. Trust me, this is one of the best things to do in Downtown Raleigh if you love food.

Finding serenity at JC Raulston Arboretum

After lunch, escape the city bustle with a peaceful visit to JC Raulston Arboretum, a 10-acre botanical gardenmanaged by North Carolina State University.

This picturesque garden features a vibrant array of flowers, trees, and tranquil walking paths. Whether you’re a plant enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful retreat, this spot is perfect for unwinding.

And yes, it’s a prime location for Instagram photos—because what’s a road trip without a few aesthetic shots?
